The Laredo Water Museum WHERE A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT, WE MUST PROTECT IT!
We recently had the pleasure of touring one of Laredo's newest museums! The Laredo Water Museum offers a great hands on first look at where our local water comes from, what's in our water, and how we can keep it clean and stop waste in our City. When you first enter you are blown away by all the colors and exciting activities that await you on both sides! The building sits adjacent to one of Laredo's water cleaning facilities and right on the banks of Laredo's beautiful Rio Grande river. There are so many insightful and amazing hands on experiences for every age group. You walk away enlightened as well as entertained! Every month they feature a multitude of activities for the community FREE of charge! You must experience this for yourself. The staff and tour guides are extremely friendly and eager to share knowledge and even challenge you to some friendly competition. Float on down to our very own Laredo Water Museum. It rivals other similar museums and I'm confident in saying it will even beat them!
Imaginarium of South Texas Where everyone's imagination is expanded.
We all know that Laredo has more hot days that most cities, so where can children exert energy while parents can either participate or sit back and watch? The Imaginarium of South Texas is located inside Mall Del Norte. This large facility houses some of the most interesting children's exhibits in Laredo. Recently renovated, it offers a large amount of revolving informative presentations for children. For a small fee, both parents and children can enjoy play and learn themes that are constantly changing to keep the young and old on their feet and excited with interest. This is the perfect place to also host field trips, family events, and birthday parties. Come out and play! Don't forget family FREE nights which fall on the second Wednesdays of every month from 4pm to 7pm. They also have fun family craft events which are announced on their Facebook page as well.
Alligators, iguanas, snakes, fish, all sorts of wildlife and plant life native to our region. Not only fun but educational as well. You can lose track of time because the wonders that you discover from getting up close and personal with creatures you're only used to in book or magazines. So put away all electronics and experience nature in real 3D.
We want our kids to be healthy and have fun, but funds are limited. Parents also need a place where they can get their fitness on and have fun too! Kids need to be active but every child has their own likes and needs, adults are no different. Our Local Parks and Recreation centers offers a TONS of classes, equipment, games, and programs for small fees. You need to find the one you like and look up what they have to offer. The cool part is that once you have a membership (about $4 amonth) you can attend any center throughout town! Activities, classes, and equipment vary based on the center. Their aquatics department also brings us a variety of swimming pools with different attractions at each site. Some have slides, lanes for exercise, splash parks for kids, various areas for our elderly and disabled, and so much more! Visit their site for all the information and locations.
The Laredo Little Theater Little theater with a big background and great performances!
The LLT has been entertaining Laredo since 1911. Their website offers a very interesting history on how they came to be. Performers in our community are given a stage to display a diverse amount of entertainment not just plays here at the LLT. Through the use of public volunteers and community support, the LLT has continued to put on award winning performances generation after generation! Be a part of this live opportunity to experience some of Laredo's most talented people.
Laredo has a "Love" for tennis!
The Laredo Tennis Association is a volunteer based organization in Laredo, Texas working toward developing and growing the game of tennis in both Laredo and surrounding areas. A governing board is elected by membership at an annual meeting in September of each year. Meetings of the organization are held as needed, but generally there are no more than three association meetings during the year. MAX-IMIZE YOUR ENJOYMENT WITH SPECTACULAR GOLF ON THE BANKS OF THE MIGHTY RIO GRANDE
Located just north of Laredo, the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course overlooks the Rio Grande River and has already been acclaimed as one of the best public courses in Texas! Golfers can enjoy stunning views of the Rio Grande valley throughout the course but especially on the four holes that play directly on the waterfront.
The par-72 layout sprawls across 270 acres of rugged south Texas landscape. The terrain is covered with 100-year-old mesquite trees and two vast arroyos, which were incorporated beautifully into the layout. There are also a variety of elevation changes across the landscape that can be challenging but the design manages to seamlessly blend dramatic features and playability. Crafted by noted architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. the course caters to golfers of all ability levels, with five sets of tees available and yardages ranging from 7,069 from the back tees to 4,759 for the forward tees. Tiger tees stretch to 7,297 yards while a dedicated “juniors” teeing area on each hole is incorporated to increase enjoyment for family play. Before and after your round come enjoy our beautiful new 9,000 square foot clubhouse opened this summer by LPGA legend Nancy Lopez. It’s the perfect place to grab some tasty local food or take your favorite cold beverage out on the patio and enjoy spectacular views across the course, the river and Mexico beyond. If improving your game is your idea of fun we have more than got you covered with a great practice facility and short game area. For those that want to learn the game or take their game to a higher level we also offer world-class instruction. Our Head Professional and Director of Better Golf, Jorge Flores has many years of teaching experience and can quickly and easily help you get the most from your game.
All year long our local state park holds events for every age and interest. Check out their calendar of events for times and dates. State Park fees apply but there is free parking. No poles, no worries, fishing poles and tackle are available for free you just need to provide your own bait! The TAMIU Planetarium It's a whole new view on life as you know it!
Conveniently located inside our own ever expanding Texas A&M International University, TAMIU's Planetarium always has features that are tailored to the young and old alike. From family friendly movies, educational features, to classics like the Pink Floyd Laser Light Tribute. It's all a matter of checking the schedule. At times they even has events that take you from the inside of the dome to the outside night sky with professional grade telescopes for the public to use. With comfortable seating and snacks that are sold for VERY reasonable prices, what's not to like? You always leave with a smile on your face and knowledge in your brain!
There's no reason to say that Laredo lacks art or culture, both are alive and well starting at our very own Laredo Center for the Arts. You can find the Laredo Philharmonic can be found at both Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College. The Phil has been under the directorship of Brendan Townsend since 2003.
